My First Impressions of the 2 New National Chain Restaurants on Guam

Chili's Grill & Bar - I've been seeing their commercials on TV for quite some time so I was really excited to visit this Resto. We waited 2 weeks after it opened to finally visit it so it isn't TOO busy and we went early, about 1130am on a Saturday, let's just say that we were there early enough to see tables available just waiting for customers to sit down, or so we thought. We walked in and there was a line forming already from inside because we didn't particularly look like they were ready. We were 3rd in line and we ended up watching the staff run around like chickens with their heads cut off for about 30 minutes. Even the obvious "Manager" was just their talking to their staff looking at clipboards, papers, monitors, completely ignoring the fact that their customers were right behind them waiting to be seated while seeing that there were tables available. When we finally sat down it took awhile before anyone came over to take our orders. I was listening in and observing the tables around us and on the table behind us there was a family that waited awhile for their drinks, and to my right was another family. To make a long story short, it was TOO obvious that the personnel at this Chili's had biased treatment towards "certain" people based what? I don't know but I was the brownest individual in the area and I pretty much got ignored while the table behind us got asked 500 times (exaggeration) by 4 or 5 different staff how everything was and if they needed anything then they would proceed to walk by us totally ignoring us. Wow. Toward the end, the only positive was that me man PJ who brought out our food and talked to us saved the whole experience for me. So if you're not the Preferred type or form factor, PJ will take care of you of that I'm sure. So here it is: Overall First Impression Grade: C-

Hooters Guam - I was excited to go here for obvious reasons, the Wings! ;) Seriously though I appreciate the female form and their symmetry as much as I appreciate good food, so you can imagine how excited I was that Hooters was coming to Guam. When a bunch of friends asked me to meet them there even before the place was 2 weeks old I was like, .. uhh.. OK! =) You could tell I was hesitant. When we got there, there was a long line outside but boy was I glad I was late, which meant my friends already had a table and were already inside, yes! A couple of things that noticed were that the ventilation of the resto was not too good. First of all it was hot inside which could mean the aircon is weak or the lighting is too hot (we had to turn some lights away from us), and their sound system was an iPod connected to a cable hopefully temporarily placed up above our table on some piping.. things that make you go hmmm... The Wings were pretty good and the girls were OK but I do want to say something about the girls outfits. 1 word: Upgrade. Well that can also be considered 2 words but hey, I'm trying to make a point here. The Hooters Girls outfits are Not flattering, well,.. maybe to the "Hooters" but not much anything else. I think the problem is that the outfits have not been updated since the inception of the Restaurant and it no longer has the same effect as it did in the olden days. Their outfits remind me of Roller Disco, Farah Fawcett and Daisy Duke. Again, time for an upgrade. Overall First Impression Grade: B

These of course are not my final grades, these are merely based on 1 visit, and I'll let you know if anything changes. I'm actually making a 2nd trip to one of them on Monday so let's see if anything changes.

Yup, I'm back, and yes I'm ok thanks for asking! ;)

I'm not going to make a lot of excuses for my extended absence, I will just say that 2008 was a really bad year for me especially during the latter part of the year, so let's just say that I had very important things to tend to, .. yeah let's just say that and hopefully you'll understand. =)

Well it's been awhile since I've posted obviously but I want to assure you that I will try to post at least once a week if my schedule will permit it.

A lot has happened since I last posted, the price of the dollar and the price of gas has gone up and down and unfortunately the only thing going down consistently lately seems to be our 401K! =P' Someone wise once told me that you are not supposed to watch your 401K and that eventually it goes on an upward trend, over the long haul. I try not to look at it and think about it too much but sometimes I can't help it, and in this market,.. Holy Cow I feel like I had better chances of making money by buying a couple thousand Lottery Tickets! Then again,.. I'll just let it be cuz whatever will be will be right?

Recent happenings on Guam that I would like to note are the recent openings of 2 National Restaurants that I would like to share my thoughts on with an honest review from yours truly the next time I post.

A pinoy of note to me would be the NBA's Miami Heat Coach Eric Spoelstra. I had mentioned him on this blog even with a picture when he was first announced Coach and here we are approaching the Playoffs and it looks like the Miami Heat are going to the Eastern Conference Playoffs! Go Eric! Mabuhay ka! If you read this can you bring me over for a playoff game or two? ;) Sige na Pare koy! =)

Ok, obviously you all already know about Manny moving up to another division by gaining 5 pounds and beating the Champ and all that Jazz, what you might don't know that I think you'll find cool is that the NBA Champs Boston Celtics are Manny fans too!! THAT IS STRAIGHT SICK, in a good way of course. Manny is putting Filipinos on the Map fo Show!! This says a lot about the Celtics too, I think more and more Filipinos are going to become Celtics fans after this. There are still a lot of people in the world that look down at us, but the fact that these NBA Champs are showing appreciation for our boy Manny,... WOW. SWEET. ;)

Pinoy Sensation Arnel Pineda Guests with Journey on Ellen's Show

As you've seen in my earlier posts, we've been following Arnel Pineda since his video with his Philippine band the Zoo on the video that was posted on youtube. Well since then a lot has happened since then but just recently he was featured in Ellen's show wherein she wanted to have them on her show a couple of weeks ago. Ellen did also mention that there are a lot of talented singers in the Philippines. You know what, she is right. ;) I salute her for admitting so, and on behalf of all of the talented singers / performers (don't forget the guys from the jabbawockeez) of Filipino blood, Thank You.

Half Filipino Erik Spoelstra named NBA's Miami Heat Head Coach

Another Pinoy-Blood makes it into the Big-Time. With Coach Pat Riley stepping down and retiring from coaching, he announces that the new Head Coach will be 13 Year Miami Heat Associate and Assistant Coach Erik Spoelstra.

MANILA, Philippines—Filipino-American Erik Spoelstra has replaced Pat Riley as the new head coach of Miami Heat after the latter announced his resignation on Tuesday.

"I just want to let everybody know how excited and honored I am to be the next coach of the Miami Heat," said Spoelstra, who has worked for the club for the past 13 years. "I want to thank everybody for having the confidence in me to lead this team on the court and in the future."

Before he assumed his new post in the 2006 National Basketball Association champion team, the 35-year-old Spoelstra served as Riley’s assistant, training young players such as Dwyane Wade.

Spoelstra’s mother is a Filipino, the former Fe Celino of San Pablo City, and his father Jon is of Dutch-Irish origin.

$ 4,000+ Water Bill from (GWA) Guam Waterworks Authority!! WTF??!!

A brief history:

I've been living in my current home for about 10 years now. My power bill has averaged anywhere from $175 to $250 per month depending of course on our usage, while my water bill has averaged anywhere from $30 to $70 per month depending again on usage over the course of 10 years. Simple right? Apparently not.

Welcome to my Nightmare:

A couple of days ago, I routinely checked my mail,.. and I routinely received my utility bills in the mail that day too. So I opened up the power bill first because that is usually higher and is the one that I am "usually" concerned about. Ok, whew! No surprises there. For some reason, I elect to open up my water bill as well, which I am not normally worried about. Here is a partial image of what I found:

What the??!! Apparently I all of a sudden consumed almost a MILLION GALLONS OF WATER IN FEBRUARY??!! But, wait, that's not all, I was OFF-ISLAND FOR 2 WEEKS IN FEBRUARY TOO! Sooo,,.. that means I consumed almost 1 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER IN 2 WEEKS!!

As you can also see above on the right hand side, my previous bill was $44.14 which is within my average. Now they are billing me $4,099.56!!!!!!! W... T.... F!!!!!!!???

That is not the worst of this experience, now for the call to GWA the next day.

So I had to wait until the next day to call because it was after working hours already for them, let's say about 4:02 in the afternoon? Just kidding. ;) Anyway, since I wasn't able to get any sleep knowing that I had just received the biggest bill of my personal life, I had to calm myself down to make the call to customer service.

Here are the details of the call to the best of my recollection:

GWA: Guam Waterworks

Me: Hi, yeah I have a problem with my billing, I have been averaging around $40 to $70 per month for 10 years and all of a sudden I am being billed for over $4,000 with almost 1 Million Gallons of water consumed... {expecting some sort of reaction}

GWA: Account Number Please

Me: W9XXXXXX

GWA: Ok just to let you know that your previous billings were based only on estimates,...

Me: What? What are you talking about? What do you mean?? Are you telling me that this is really how much I owe??

GWA: I'm just telling you that your previous billings were only based on estimates and that we will need to investigate it further.

Me: Well PLEASE DO!!

GWA: Excuse me?

Me: I said Please DO! {hmm,.. I wonder what she thought I said?;)}

GWA: You will need to fax a map and call us back within 2 Weeks.

Me: Ok, wait, just so we are clear, are you folks NOT having any other issues like this?? Is it only me??

GWA: Yes sir we are having many issuess like this..

Me: Ok then I'll fax it

I hang-up, draw a map, and try to fax it to the number she gave, it just kept ringing with no answer. So I called GWA again:

GWA: Guam Waterworks

Me: I've been trying to fax but the machine is not answering..

GWA: What does the machine say?

Me: N-o M-a-c-h-i-n-e A-n-s-w-e-r. =P'

GWA: Hold on, I will have to walk over to where the machine is..

Me: Was it off?

GWA: {delay} It's working fine it's receiving faxes.

Me: OOOO,,...KKKK,....

GWA: Just keep trying,..

Me: I'll try now can't you just watch it?

GWA: I need to return to my post now just keep trying.

Me: {frustrated} Ok

After hanging up, all of a sudden the fax machine was busy. Yup, just as I thought, it was off, they just didn't want to admit it. They just assume that all of their customers are idiots.

Look, I run a business too, and I have some simple tips s for everyone in Customer Service:

a little empathy goes a long way,
try to put yourself in the customers shoes, in their situation, then you'll understand, and only then can you truly help them,
if you or the company makes a mistake, admit it, they'll respect you more for it,
your salary is getting paid by your business' customers so please, show some respect yourself, the Government is no exception.

Having some IT and Management background, I have a tip for GWA Management to consider as well:

It should be easy enough to tag Residential Accounts that either have a usage that is TOO HIGH for a Residence, or if this month's bill is unusually LARGE as compared to the previous months, with some simple code in their billing output programs,
Add more controls and Audit your Billing Please.

For now, I wait, but you never know, who knows what is going on here..

Nightmare at BDO (Banco De Oro) Greenhills Virra Mall

Just a warning to you all, be wary of the BDO ATM in Greenhills. My bro tried to use the ATM yesterday and in one shot, the machine confiscated his Credit Card. We went into the bank to tell the personnel and after presenting his Driver's License she proceeded to say that he needed a 2nd Id. So let's get this straight, here are the facts:

We reported the card taken,
The guard even saw us,
He presented his Driver's License with a Picture and all of the required information,
And their policy was to ask for a 2nd ID?
Stupid.

This is much like their policy in the Philippines that you need to sign the back of your credit card. So basically it doesn't matter who you are, as long you have something scribbled on the back of the card you're good. It doesn't matter if you have the ID that matches the information on the card, it is their policies.

I'm beginning to think that Philippines Policies like these are simply retarded, but if you want to argue go ahead I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but mind you, I will go at it with you. ;)

Yung mga poser dyan, na walang ginawa kundi magkunwari, mainggit, manggaya at manloko nang kapwa, magpakatotoo kayo, nakabantay ang Diyos sa ating lahat at alam nya ang totoo.

Ito ay ilan lamang na priority nating kailangang nating ayusin, kung may kaibigan kayong ganito ay please, be a friend at pagsabihan nyo naman... Lahat tayo makikinabang kung magtutulungan lang tayo. =) We can make this a better place to live 1 person at a time.

Well,.. what can I say, I guess we Filipinos are natural Entertainers,.. he he he.. ;)

He isn't a great singer, and it was obvious that the purpose of the "Audition" was not to be the next American Idol but to get the opportunity to be on (Inter)National TV, but hey, the Energy was great and it he got the MOST PARTICIPATION FROM THE JUDGES! he he.. Even Paula Abdul busted out some old moves for this one! She's cool. ;)

Like Simon said, he has a feeling that there is going to be a single or album with this song "I Am Your Brother"! ;) Maybe someday you'll be able to buy his album from the OPM CD Store gustokoh.com! =D

Well if you don't, you probably will soon. I saw on the G4 Network that this guy who happens to be a fellow Pinoy was recruited by Journey to become their new front man. Apparently they decided to contact him after seeing his and most of all hearing his performances on You Tube! Most of the posts are performances with his Pinoy Band "The Zoo".

What do you think of this picture? What is it really? he he.. Of course it is merely a publicity stunt but this kind of thing happens all the time.

A good example is how one company partnered itself up with a new, up and coming company a couple of years ago that had an Innovating New Service only to try to obtain trade secrets, attempt to hire employees and eventually steal the Innovators customers. (Hint hint.. yes this is on Guam and yes, you know who they are! =D) They then tried to ride off of the Innovating companies coat tails and confuse the hell out of the consumers. This is just bad Business Ethics, but hey, Karma will catch up to All of Us, eventually. Whether it is Good or Bad, it will come back to us in the end, because life is like a "Circle",.. he he.. ;)

Although, the sample above is nothing like the funny picture below, since Ronald McDonald is the innovator in this case and maybe he is just trying to see who's burger is better? hehe..

Pinoy stereotyping is the worst because we discriminate against ourselves. Don't you ever notice that if pinoys are the ones servicing they automatically give respect to the foreigners and just assume that the brown pinoy sitting over there is a nobody? You'll notice the next time you go to the Philippines, everyone wants to be white, japanese or chinese... nobody wants to be pinoy. For males it is especially hard to become attractive to the filipinas especially if you are an alpha male of some sort. Most Pinay girls are now attracted to guys that have smooth white skin, silky shiny hair, clean cut nails and wears pink shirts left and right. Basically their attracted to... girls!! Hey!... girl on girl action yeah!! ;D he he just kidding. Maybe THAT was what Michael Jackson was thinking when he did what he did with his skin?..

A couple of posts ago I mentioned a sign that I took a picture of while on the Kwajalein Atoll, well guess what? I found it!! =) You know that saying "To See is To Believe"? Well that is exactly why I took this picture. Imagine my surprise when I saw it on the bike trail that I was on:

After reading the English portion of the sign I immediately looked up while ducking in a somewhat insane fashion, use your imagination. ;D

I decided to take it's picture because it is not everywhere and everyday that you need to Look for Aircraft before Proceeding on a Bike Trail! There's your sign. =D

I say close to home because whenever I am in the Philippines we always go to Glorietta. There was speculation that it was caused by an LPG tank, there is always speculation. Now they are finding that there are traces of C4 (explosive) at Ground Zero of the explosion. It is always like this, they always speculate that it was an accident, but obviously it never is.

Just like 9/11 some stupid tv anchor asked something after the 2nd plane crashed into the 2nd building and it sounded like something like "could it be that there is some sort of beacon that is leading these planes to the buildings?" - I was like, "whoa!, that is very perceptive of them.. NOT!! What are they? complete and utter idiots?" Obviously we all know that we are victims of terrorism.

This latest one is scary because it happened somewhere that I and my friends and family frequent, maybe even some of you and yours.

I found this video on gmanews that was taken from someone's cellphone and I thought I'd share it with you, there are not a lot of pictures or video from the inside and this is from the inside, kinda freaky, good thing it didn't show any of those victims that died.

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to rant on about how our "Pambansang Kamao" made us Filipinos proud again yesterday by beating the pride of Mexico.

He even made us even prouder by showing us his Gentlemanly actions by taking Barreras cheap shot and not getting back at him.

Pacquiao represents what we Filipinos should be. He works hard to be the best at what he loves to do. He does not look at what someone else is doing, try to copy it and put someone else down hoping that it would help him be more successful. This is how some of our kababayans are which is truely a shame, which is why I hope that more of us act like as Manny does in the Ring.

Mexico might as well try to offer Manny Citizenship because they can't seem to beat him!! he he

Opinion: Guam Wifi... Really?! Where?

If any of you are considering subscribing to the Network Provider of Wifi wherein they claim that you will be able to access the internet from your mobile computer at any of their "HotSpots" do not, I repeat, DO NOT DO IT.

I am clearly a dork and I want my internet access wherever I go, well obviously I subscribed to this service. I've tried to access this service numerous times and it is always unavailable. I would call to inform them the next day because you can't call them after a certain hour but they just say that they are working on it.

So last night there I was again hoping that I would be able to get some work done over dinner at one the "HotSpots" and there again, no wifi. I asked the person in charge and he goes, "yeah the router is down again, sorry about that,.." I asked is there anyone we can call and of course there isn't.

So there, don't, because it won't be there when you need it anyway. =P'

Bottom-Line: The Wii is fun for the WHOLE family, and I DO mean EVERYONE, yes even our parents! ;) It is re-defining the demographic of Game Players all over the world. If you play your cards right, Wii can even help you lose weight! Instead of moving only your fingers to play games, you are actually moving,.. swinging your hand to throw a bowling ball, swinging to one side really fast to hit a baseball etc. You have got to try it to believe it. I did, and I do! =D

Serve & Protect, themselves?

For those of you who visit this blog from Guam, I'm sure you've read about what happened at the local cemetary.. For those of you who have not read it, check out the news either through the Guam News link from the http://www.gabriel-tech.com/ webpage or go to guampdn.com or kuam.com. Here's what we do know:

This guy's brother had just died,
This guy's brother in law had forewarned police that this guy would not harm anyone and if he has a gun it isn't real,
This guy exited his car, thus viewable by all of the authorities, even SWAT,
Apparently SWAT was there too,
SWAT stands for Special Weapons and Tactics,
All this guy was threatening was his own life,
Police shot and killed him,
A total of 9 or 10 shots were fired, possibly all hitting him,
It is still under investigation,
The family was there to witness it,
They believe that it wasn't necessary, and it didn't have to end that way,
One of the family members is an ex-cop,
All of these have been stated in one way or form but until they release the final details they are all speculations.

Here is my take on it:

If he was only trying to kill himself what were the cops thinking? "You are NOT allowed to kill yourself, but WE CAN kill you?",
Couldn't the sniper of the SWAT Team just shoot the gun or even his hand or arm to disarm the poor guy? hence, the T for Tactics?..,
Are our law enforcement officers that lacking in training? Or maybe in live action and they get too excited when they get some?,
Are our law enforcement officer unclear as to what their objectives and duties are?,
Are they serving and protecting us? or themselves?,
Correct me if I'm wrong but most people are afraid of the Police, not because they are guilty of something but because Guam Police tend to be mean and biased unless you are related to them or you know somebody that they know and so on,
Ok, NOT ALL, but A LOT of them are like that and that makes us afraid of them instead of feeling safe in their presence, SAD, but TRUE.
These are my opinions and I would like to know what you think, please post your comments if you have any on this.

Sorry I had to get all serious on you guys but I just had to get this out of my head. I am by far no genius when it comes to law enforcement but I can think of a whole lot of ways to avoid having to kill an emotionally distraught individual.

I'll try to post something happy next time but for now, let's hope that those that Serve & Protect, Serve the People and Protect the Laws of the Land.

I went out this weekend!

So what's the big deal? For starters, I don't really go out here in Guam, .. why? Trust me, once you've gone out in the Philippines when you go out here the money that you spend is hardly worth the most possible fun you can have here. I was just dropping my bro off but they convinced me to stay for awhile.

So first we checked out Marty's, dead, then we went over to Mac & Marty's, hung out there and listened to the band while having a beer,.. I guess there was a ship because locals / pinoys like me were a minority in that place. he he..

We ended up in a nice comfy place with a good band and I think it was luck that majority of the guam models (all females of course) were in one place just hangin out. Too bad I didn't know any of them and that I don't have any kahoneys to go up and talk to the one I liked. =P' Oh Well...

At any rate, after leaving that place, I noticed that there were a lot of Officers of the Law on the road. So, some of you still don't designate a driver huh?, well guess what,.. if you are in any way as wasted as the guy in this video, please, please, stay off the road,.. you could end up hurting more than yourself.

So,.. do you think this guy passed the sobriety test? ;)

So I just watched the movie, primarily because of Jessica Alba, if you need to ask why, search this blog for "The Male Brain Explained." ;)

At any rate, before you watch it, as a warning, leave your children at home. Otherwise it is funny and sometimes nasty, the part at the end during the credits was totally uncalled for. ;)

I give it a ***1/2 (three and a half stars) out of 5. If you really really like breasteseez you'll like it VERY MUCH. ;)

Hey everybody check out the new airliner to the Philippines! Some of you may have already seen it flying around but what the hey:

Anywho the moral of the story is: "Don't believe everything you read, especially on the Internet! " =) Trust me, this will come in handy. My lack of trust for a lot of things, even people has saved me so many times I can't even count.

At any rate, I personally fly Continental most of the time mainly because I take advantage of the miles any way I can. If you live on Guam, one of the first things you need to do is sign up for the Continental Onepass Membership.

By the way, we pinoys tend to discriminate against our own so for me, being a brown skin pinoy flying Continental allows me to fly in a neutral setting. Yep, you read right, we pinoys tend to respect others more than we respect each other, it's a shame but it is true, and you know it. That and our "Crab Mentality" are 2 of our people's most undesireable traits, but let's not focus on that. =) I'll try to concentrate on our positives going forward, unless I go off on one of those tangents.

Simply put, "Men are Simple, and Women are detail oriented and complex". If you are reading this and you are a Man, you most probably don't need any further explanation. If you are a Woman reading this, you probably are asking yourself, "what does he mean?" ;) Although if you are a Woman and you already understand, .. Congratulations! You get it. =D

Please Read Signs Very Carefully

While visiting an Atoll near Hawaii I came across one of the weirdest signs I had ever seen. I was riding a bike and following the bike trail, and right smack in the middle of the bike trail around an hour into my riding, there stood the Sign that said:

"Watch Out for Approaching Aircraft."

I was like, all panicky and looking around and ducking and thinking to myself: "WHAT THE??!!" This is a TRUE STORY. The explanation is is that it is an Atoll and it is so small that there are NO Cars, only bicycles and golf carts, SSOOOO,.. that means the airport is, right smack dab in the middle of well, everything!? =P'

At any rate I guess that that is not the weirdest / funniest sign I've ever seen anymore. See what the Alaskan's have to deal with here:

To Vista or Not To Vista?

I've been asked a couple of times whether or not someone should upgrade to Vista. I'll try to answer this as simply put as possible, but if I ramble on I can't help it. ;)

First of All, I am one of those people who always wants to have the latest and greatest as well, except for certain things like New Medical Procedures & Operating Systems along with a couple of others. I'll explain the latter since that is what we are talking about. Operating Systems are Software, and there is NO 100% COMPLETE AND PERFECT SOFTWARE, it simply does NOT EXIST. Sad, but true, it is a Software Engineering fact. Based on this, when do you think that a piece of software is at it's worst? Yes, thank you, when it is NEW!

When it comes to Operating Systems like Windows, at least wait long enough for Microsoft to release 1 or 2 Service Packs, so they have found and fixed most of the biggest issues and even worse, Security Flaws & Bugs.

Here are my more specific suggestions:

If you are a simple user with simple needs like Internet Access, E-mail, Word Processing and a Spread Sheet here and there, be my guest. Most of the good Hardware deals come with Vista already anyway, but

If you have programs and/or applications that you want to transfer into your new machine, forget it. Chances are they won't work, very Good chances actually, which is Bad, I'm confused.. If this is you, as an advanced user, I would suggest that you stick with XP Pro for awhile.

Well so much for that, at least whenever someone asks me again I can point to this post so I don't have to explain it over and over...

By the way, these are MY OPINIONs, if you have others you may POST COMMENTS so the readers may get more information from this blog.

This is me, just minding my business, trying to exercise when the weather just smacks me on the back of my head. =P'

If there was anything that I could change here on Guam it would be the weather. It just isn't ideal for staying healthy. I have been fighting my being overweight (in the genes, not the jeans) ALL MY LIFE. Being on Guam just makes it even more difficult to fight weight gain. When it is hot, it is TOO HOT to do anything much less walk anywhere outdoors. Here on Guam, when you need to go to a store a block or two away most of us take the car because it is too hot! Then there are days like today wherein I tried to exercise but what happens? It pours right after I start!!

I swear, the two times that are guaranteed to rain are:

Right after I wash my car, and

When I plan to exercise.

Patents have been applied for these two items to replace the RAIN DANCE as a more effective method of making it RAIN. =P'

I just can't win! ={ All I can do is Persevere. Just like William Hung advised America. =D

At any rate I'll just have to try again tomorrow. =P' That is all I can do.
